In its latest blog post, Best Drug Rehabilitation, which offers treatment programs and believes that having family close by during a stay in rehab can make a big difference in whether or not the process is successful, has busted four big, dangerous and persistent addiction myths.

Its difficult to estimate just how damaging and destructive these addiction myths are, commented Best Drug Rehabilitations CEO Per Wickstrom. Not only do they ensnare new addicts, but they prevent current addicts from getting the essential, often life-saving treatment they need. Its my hope that this latest blog post will clear the air and give people the facts they need to stay safe and possibly, to survive as well.

According to Best Drug Rehabilitation, the four persistent and dangerous addiction myths to watch out for are:

1. Myth: Drug Addiction is a Choice. Many people fail to grasp the fundamental difference between experimenting with drugs and becoming addicted. Yes, for some though not all people, experimenting with drugs is a choice. Yet addiction, by definition, is never a choice. Nobody chooses to become addicted; with repeated use, however, the body and brain chemistry begins to change in ways that people dont notice, cannot comprehend, and cannot stop. Invariably, addiction takes root and wont let go without a fight.

2. Myth: Drug Addiction Only Happens to Losers. Addiction has no limits, and no preferred demographic or regional target. Impoverished inner city kids become addicts; so do suburban multimillionaires and billionaires. People down on their luck and struggling become addicts; so do famous celebrities and athletes who seem to have everything handed to them on a silver platter. Alienated and marginalized people become addicts; so do parents, teachers, police officers, and people who from the outside appear to live normal, functional lives. The point to remember is that addiction is an equal opportunity affliction and in some respects, an epidemic.

3. Myth: Drug Addiction Cant Occur with a Prescription. Many people mistakenly believe that prescription painkillers, anti-anxiety medication or stimulants are safe because theyre created in a licensed lab and authorized for use by a doctor. These drugs are only safe when used as prescribed, and use must be monitored by a doctor. When it comes to addiction: drugs are drugs. The fact that some are illicit and controlled, while others are available by prescription is beside the point.

4. Myth: Drug Addiction is an Untreatable Disease. Each year across the country, hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life get the medically-approved, compassionate treatment they need to break free of addiction and live a happy, healthy sober life. For some this journey is more difficult than others. However, with the right treatment provided by an accredited facility, along with dedication and commitment on behalf of the addict, recovery is not only available and possible its likely and probable.

Added Per Wickstrom: While all of these myths must be shattered right now, Id have to say that the fourth one is the most insidious. Drug treatment is definitely possible, and so is lasting recovery. It happens every day at Best Drug Rehabilitation, and in other accredited treatment facilities across the country.
